Founder
Dr. Alexandru Popa is a distinguished medical professional and a visionary leader in the field of clinical research. Born and raised in Romania, Dr. Popa earned his medical degree and PhD from the esteemed Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy (UMFCD) in Bucharest. As an infectious disease specialist, he has dedicated his career to advancing medical science, particularly in the study of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) and other critical therapeutic areas.
In 1992, Dr. Popa founded POPAMED, a full-service Clinical Research Organization (CRO) that has become a global leader in the design, execution, and management of clinical trials. Under his leadership, POPAMED has fostered collaborations with some of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies, CROs, and public health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), Harvard Institute of Public Health (HIPH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Dr. Popa’s extensive work in infectious diseases and his unwavering focus on ALS research have made significant contributions to the understanding and treatment of these complex conditions. His commitment to improving global health has earned him a reputation as a pioneer in clinical research.
Dr. Popa’s work is deeply personal and inspired by profound experiences. In memory of his daughter, Maria, who was tragically born with anencephaly and passed away shortly after birth, he established the POPAMED Foundation. The foundation is dedicated to supporting families affected by rare and terminal conditions, promoting awareness, and funding groundbreaking research to find cures for life-altering diseases like ALS.
